Being a CD - 17 August, 2007

What is a CD?  CD stands for Contest Director. As a CD you are acting on behalf of AMA to run the contest. Before applying for CD status you should go to the AMA website, in the left column click on Publication and from the list of publications that appear click on #303, print it, read it and follow the directions. You must be a AMA member to be a CD. This is not only an application for being a CD but explains what you have to do to in order to be approved to be a CD.

First and foremost is preparation. You can't prepare enough, so, to aid those that follow I am writing my thoughts down to help the future neophyte CD.

Lining up your ducks - the following items should be covered way before the contest.

1 - Assistant - CD. Choose someone you can work with and know is willing to help assist you. Talk it over with prospective prospects before you take on the task of being a CD and then ask for the person you want.

2 - Try to have some plan worked out before contest time. I have prepared a list of subjects that should be covered. Undoubtedly I have missed some things. Just add or modify this instrument in the way it will best serve you as CD but it would be helpful if you pass on your changes. Eliminate (cross out) the items you know you will not use then concentrate on planning details of those items that remain on the list.         Click on the green button to go to the list of subjects that should be covered.

3 - There is a temptation for a new CD to try to do too much. Make sure you have designated the tasks to those that have volunteered help. Go over what you expect and what you expect they are going to do. I have prepared a list of items you should review for being a CD at the GLASS field. There may be things to be added or deleted as the list is only a suggested starting point.
